Write a Zenpack win Fabulous Prizes

You don’t need to program a thing to write a Zenpack.

Here’s a quick tutorial on how to export a Zenpack from your existing Zenoss instance. In ten minutes time you can export a Zenpack and then share it with other users. It could be a monitor for Oracle or your NetApp filer or something else that you have set up under Zenoss already. The key is to start sharing your experience with other Zenoss users and have them do the same so it’s easier bring applications and hardware under management.
Now for the fabulous prizes, for the first ten people who create a Zenpack I am offering a limited edition, black Zenoss Golf Shirt. Take my word for it they are very nice. If I get 20 Zenpacks in the next 30 days, I will institute the mystery prize, something very cool yet to be decided. To win I will draw from the names of all Zenpack contributors.

Ubuntu 7.10 DNS

After the upgrade, browsers, mail clients and other Internet-related applications run very slowly. Loading pages in Firefox can take 30+ seconds and sending/receiving emails seems interminable too.

On inspection, the Network settings seems to forget any custom settings (I had pointed it at the OpenDNS servers). Adding the OpenDNS servers to the router’s settings didn’t help. Re-adding the DNS servers to the Network Settings helped for about five minutes when it would once again lose the configuration and slow down.

Zenpacks

We are working on documentation including a Zenpack developer’s guide but here’s a simple introduction on how to create and export a Zenpack from the Zenoss GUI. We’ve also started a Zenpack forum where you can ask questions about Zenpacks or share your ideas with other Zenoss users.

Discovery to acquire HowStuffWorks.com

Through HowStuffWorks, Discovery Communications also will hold a minority equity position in HSW International, that has the local language rights to the HowStuffWorks content and brand in Brazil and China.

The impact to Discovery Communications’ operating cash flow will be immaterial in year one, the company said in a statement.
How Stuff Works is a long standing provider of edutainment content on the web. The site was founded in 1998 by former North Carolina State University professor Marshall Brain, took venture capital at the height of the first web boom in 1999 and was acquired by the Convex Group in 2002.

According to Alexa, How Stuff Works has passed its glory days of popularity, having peaked in 2005 and declined in traffic since then, however the site still ranks in the top 2000 sites online.

Chairman Conyers Reacts to Voting Chief’s Comments

Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) released a statement in response to news reports that Department of Justice (DOJ) Voting Section Chief John Tanner’s investigation of the 2004 election in Ohio concluded that long lines and late voting precincts were due to the fact that white voters tend to cast ballots in the morning (i.e., before work) and black voters cast ballots in the afternoon (i.e., after work). The news report appeared online at the popular blog, TPMmuckraker.com.

Graphing Social Patterns, the Business of APIs

The next couple of months are going to be very busy on the conference circuit. We’ll obviously have the main event of the Web 2.0 industry, Web 2.0 Summit, in a couple of weeks - no need to talk about that one. I want to give a shout to 4 events that are put together by friends of mine, and look very interesting.

First, starting in a couple of days is Graphing Social Patterns : The Business & Technology of Facebo

Open Source Software and the Power

It’s also a pretty good summary of how open source software is become a leveler that allow more organizations to take advantage of the benefits of enterprise-grade software without the Fortune 1000 price. The reason we can do this is because we have the benefit of collaborating with our users in a transparent way.

Open Source Network Management

Zenoss Core running on Ubuntu to create a complete open source network management stack. It’s good for us to see because as much as I wish that Zenoss Core met their needs to accomplish all of this on it’s own, but it’s nice to see that you can combine other open source solutions to create a solution that’s appealing to small companies and large companies like those that belong to the Fortune 1000.

More than just books

Yup, we’ve had our share of rock concerts at the library:
He also mentions a party at the Central Library in Seattle, it’s this huge, uber-modern looking public library which some of my colleagues have visited and raved about.

The party was reported as:

Maybe what we’re all so enamored with about the Central Library is that it isn’t a library so much as the best of all possible nightclubs.
